Right wing Drew Stafford has had a rough go of it early this season. On Friday against Atlanta, Stafford's sluggish start was verified when he found himself on the outside looking in as a healthy scratch.

Through the first 12 games, Stafford, Buffalo's first-round pick (13th overall) in 2004, had accumulated just three points on two goals and an assist. Playing alongside red-hot Thomas Vanek, who leads the league in goals, and playmaking center Derek Roy, Stafford's pedestrian numbers just didn't add up for coach Lindy Ruff.

"In Drew's case, I expect more," Ruff said. "It hasn't worked the way it's been going. Part of that is the line, and part of that is Drew."

Despite the one-game benching, Ruff believes the third-year pro has the ability to turn his season around if he's more aggressive with the puck.

"It's more about him getting the north-south game going, and driving the net," he said. "Below the top of the circles is a scenario that I think he can do a good job."

Stafford was back in the lineup against the Bruins on Saturday and played on the fourth line with left wing Patrick Kaleta and center Paul Gaustad. Stafford played about 10 minutes and didn't figure in the scoring.

BRUINS 3, SABRES 1: The Sabres failed to hold onto a one-goal lead for the second consecutive night in their loss to Boston on Saturday. After blowing a 4-3 third-period lead in an overtime loss to Atlanta Friday, Buffalo surrendered three unanswered Boston goals following Tim Connolly's first tally of the season midway through the first period. The Sabres are 1-1 against the Bruins this season.
